Gibbs / The Premature Wig / dubLoner / Bal Cath / Electronic Music Composer / Reverse Commuter / Hiss and Buzz Kenneth James Gibson is a man of many personas. Keeping up with him can be a time consuming, yet rewarding venture into sound. As soon as you think you know him and can grasp whats going on, he puts on yet another mask and becomes something else. Always a surprise and never a let down, he gives us what we want but dont expect. A rare stone in todays musical climate, Ken is rolling and collects no moss.—- Kens first recordings were as the guitarist, singer, part time keyboardist and producer of the 90s indi rock band Furry Things. He slowly grew tired of being in a band and started producing a slew of electronic mish mash on his own as Eight Frozen Modules. Starting out with a guitar, half broken sampler (given to him by King Coffee of the legendary Texas band The Butthole Surfers), a drum machine, borrowed synths and a four track, Ken laid down an off kilter mix of electro, abstract hip hop, dub and techno.—- In 1997, Ken moved from Austin Texas to the big city of Los Angeles, California. After releasing a few records as Eight Frozen Modules on various labels such as Trance Syndicate and City Slang, he gave up the 4 track and guitar for a desktop computer and software. While taking a few years off from releasing music, he learned how to create a new world in the land of computers. After 3 years of not leaving his padded studio cell, he resurfaced with the 2001 Eight Frozen Modules CD Random Activities and Broken Sunsets, a mix of glitched out electro, techno, and idm for the LA label, Phthalo. Since then, he has also released music under the names [a]pendics.shuffle, The Premature Wig, dubLoner, Electronic Music Composer, Reverse Commuter, Bal Cath, Hiss and Buzz (with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto), and most recently as Kenneth James G., and KJ Gibbs for labels such as Mo’s Ferry Productions, Adjunct, Resopal, Floppy Funk, Underl_ne, Orac, Mille Plateaux, Planet-Mu, Proptronix, Disco Inc., and Sunset Diskos….just to name a few.—- When Kenneth isn’t in the studio reeking havoc on his neighbors, he is touring the world playing his music for the crazy kids late at night. Biography :

Alland Byallo is one of the busiest men in the San Francisco techno community. Having produced electronic music for over 10 years and DJing for nearly as long Alland come to be an international talent, releasing music on respected US and European record labels such as Liebe*Detail, Floppy Funk, Dirtybird, and Utensil Recordings, and headlining events all over. His music, a blend of old and new elements of techno, house and minimal, is regularly charted and has been licensed to CD’s released by Universal and Proton Music.

Alland’s involvement with music didn’t just start from splurging and buying some 1200’s. Having been raised with music since the age of 5 playing piano, and adding trumpet at age 11, it only seemed natural for Alland to follow up his skills and training by sharing his taste in quality music with people as a DJ, and pursuing production. Alland is always quite busy in the studio working hard on his own unique take on electronic dance music for his own Nightlight Music and many other labels.

In 2006 Alland founded ElektrUS. This private forum is made specifically to increase European interest in the American minimal techno / tech-house scene. By providing a simple, central and easy means of communication, ElektrUS streamlines the booking process and maximizes the productivity of tour booking ventures. The hope is to make the US a more fun and respectable place for the techno community, and a more profitable venture for European talent and agents.This forum was a large part of successful US techno bookings in 2007, and is set to help more in the coming years.

Not only is Alland a resident, graphic designer and A&R for what is arguably the States’ most respected and notorious techno night, [KONTROL], he is also booked regularly alongside talents such as Superpitcher, Trentemoller, Michael Mayer, Swayzak, Miss Kittin, Modeselektor, Claude VonStroke, Jeff Samuel, Heartthrob, Ambivalent and many others. Alland has quickly grown to be one of the most in-demand Techno talents that SF has to offer, and after performing live at Seattle‘s Decibel Festival, DJing at Lovefest SF last year and the Beatport Stage at DEMF Movement in 2008, it’s obvious that the future promises to be a huge year for both him and his label, Nightlight Music.

Biography :

Franklin’s early musical roots began with a Taiwan Drumset and a Hohner Organ. After some training years under the influence of metal, jazz, 70s prog/rock and live perfomances as a versatile drummer his transition to electronic music began with an Amiga 500 computer.

The Trackermusic of this machine lead him to the early techno music of the 90s and early production experiments in his Father’s home studio. First releases followed in 1995 to 96 on the label Fusion Records (w/ 303 Nation Member, Patrick Vauillaume). Later he released as Tichy on various Frankfurt techno labels until at the end of the 90s his search for inspiration brought him to a very experimental production phase without the „4 to the floor“ presetting. From this he developed his distinctive trademark sound with straight grooves and frisky sound design.

With the concentration on DJing and party organising Franklin began the extroverted phase of the studio nerd. In 2003 he started working with Yapacc and founded the Studiogemeinschaft project. Along with the infamous Frankfurt DJs Bo Irion and Miriam Schulte they started « The Green Empire » events and internet community.

Meanwhile Franklin was gaining more international recognition with releases on well-known labels such as Trapez ltd, Karmarouge Noir, Einmaleins Musik and Treibstoff. His singles entered the charts of the german groove magazine, german dance charts and the charts of djs worldwide.

In 2007 he released with Yapacc together the first Green Empire Release. Expect for 2008 some new music on Leena, Resopal Red, Below and Curle.

Estroe started DJing in 1997. Soon she gets the opportunity to play at HQ-a party organised by Dance Valley (nowadays better known as UDC). Recognized for the qualities of her DJing style, she becomes resident at their Concept parties. During her one-year residency, she plays as a warm-up DJ with the likes of Derrick May, Stacey Pullen, Sven Vath and others, and learns how to transform an empty dance floor into a party. In 1998 Estroe was nominated for a Dutch award (Zilveren Ster) as new upcoming talent.

This was a kick that would result in more domestic and international bookings. Throughout her career she performed at various renowned parties and festivals, such as Dance Valley, Awakenings, Mysteryland, Extrema, and countries like Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Finland, Israel, to name but a few. From 2000 to 2002 she was one of the residents of the Off the Record nights at the infamous Amsterdams Mazzo, together with DJs Carlijn, Cellie and Steve Rachmad. Parallel, Estroe gave a chance to new talent as well, at her « Set Off » evenings, also in Mazzo.

Together with DJ Steffi (Klakson), in 2002 she started a new evening Explicit Sounds, which focused on experimental electronic music. Unfortunately, Mazzo stopped all the electronic music nights in September 2002, which meant the end for all these concepts as well. Up to this date, Estroes DJing schedule is quite hectic and motivating; in 2004 she was one of the few Dutch DJs to play at the Movement festival in Detroit, USA; she also had the honor to close off the big Lowlands festival in Holland. Being a lady of many interests, Estroe also fancies participation in various projects.

In 2005 she hosted and attended few DJ workshops; is one of the artists at the web community Little-D (www.Little-D.com); was asked to make a music demo for Heineken commercial; also selected to join the Redbull Music Taster in Amsterdam. Estroe joined forces with ZoëXenia and Dj Esther as B-Switched (www.b-switched.com); a mixture of back to back dj-sets and ZoëXenia as a vocalist and live performer.

Estroe started producing in 2003; her debut on Less is Morecordings was released in January 2005 (www.Lessismorecordings.com). More releases in 2005 were on Less is More and Journeys (www.musicaljourneys.nl).

Efdemin and Rndm bring the funk as Pigon on this week’s RA podcast.

If the RA podcast were a sitcom, this one would be a « very special episode. » In our very first repeat performance, we’ve got Phillip Sollmann, AKA Efdemin, returning to the controls as one-half of Pigon. For those unfamiliar with Sollmann’s collaborative project with Oliver Kargl, AKA Rndm, it’s basically their jam band outfit, music « mostly done live with simple edits. »

For their RA podcast, however, the duo have chosen to go the DJ mix route, selecting a host of classic and shoulda-been-classic tracks from the likes of Jesper Dahlbäck (as the Persuader), Jeff Mills, and Soul Capsule. Up-to-the-minute fetishists need not worry, though, Momus’s forthcoming Dial release leads off the cast and Pigon’s new joint on Beatstreet helps close it out.

Since RA already spoke to Efdemin for his own podcast, we quizzed Kargl about Pigon’s name, the software they use, and who might make a better freestyle rapper.

Why Pigon?

Why not? We got to know each other two months before painting walls in a big gallery in Vienna. It was hot and we had a discussion going on the whole day about conscious hip-hop. We really started to hate each other, but at the end of the day we decided that Prince is—and was—on top of things and that we also both love techno music.

Shortly after, we found ourselves making music together. And one day we came across a file called PIGON on Phillip’s computer. We didn’t know what it was or what it was for. We were looking for a name for our project at that time. Also, it fits Phillip’s gusto for weird names like Efdemin, Tobin, Duma…

Where and how was the mix recorded?

The mix was actually recorded in Phillip’s apartment, because we have no studio at the moment. We both made a selection of our favourite records and picked the best of them and tried the whole day to get a cool mix together. This is what we ended up. It presents some typical Pigon-DJ-team selections and also our upcoming track for Beatstreet, which also features Marcel Dettmann and will be out in September.

Your software is called Rocker. Can you tell us about it and the importance of the live vibe to Pigon?

The software is called Max/MSP, the patch we use is called Rocker. A really stupid name, I know, but we kept it after all those years. It’s a Max/MSP patch that we developed

In 2004, Phillip was doing the programming and I was the first excited beta tester. Soon, I began to demand more features, which ended in a lot of work and after endless discussions about music, synthesizers, and house, the thing wasn’t working. A real great mess. It took hours before you could hear actual sound which were normal and really cool when you work with Max. Nowadays, we don’t use it so much, as we have some nice hardware. But it’s still an important tool in the work of Pigon and will be updated soon.

You claim Big L as an influence on your MySpace page. Which one of you is the better freestyle rapper?

We both would be lousy freestyle rappers. Phillip is a good soul singer, like a white Barry White. Big L was listed in our influences because he was so raw and uncut. He was dirty sounding, there was no polished bling bling—the total opposite of what was big in hip-hop during that time. He never had much major success, but everyone that was into hip-hop knew about him.

We both listened to a lot of hip-hop when we were growing up. (Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, De La Soul. Later, it’s been stuff like Wu-Tang, Rawkus, and Stones Throw.)

What are you up to next?

Make more music. Spread the PIGON-vibe while playing records together (and some special live shows). And become wiser with time.
